Hold your horses; it’s a new series of Rasus

Popular harness racing series Rasus celebrates its twenty-first birthday this year and to mark this milestone the crew are back with a new series on S4C.

Viewers can look forward to the S4C Welsh Cup Final, the S4C Welsh Crock of Gold Cup Final, the Strata Florida Handicap Final, the Welsh Classic Final and all the preliminary races for these competitions over the summer. The hoofs first hit the track on Saturday, 6 July as Rasus brings you highlights from the first day of the Ceredigion Trotting Festival. English commentary will be available on this year's live broadcasts via the red button.

Presenter Ifan Jones Evans from Pontrhydygroes will be there bringing the latest from the track.  "I always look forward to the racing season. Harness racing events provide some of the most exciting moments in the horse-racing calendar; I just hope the weather is on our side this year," says Ifan, who’s enjoyed harness racing for many years and remembers watching Rasus with his family as a child.

Unfortunately this race in Ceredigion had to be rearranged last year following heavy rainfall and an alternative race meeting was held at the Tairgwaith racing track in theAmmanValley.

"It was just too wet," remembers Ifan, who’s been one of the Rasus presenting team for three years. "But things look more promising for this year, and everyone in the area is hoping we can hold the races here in Ceredigion. It’s one of the best tracks around. It’s a stone’s throw from the beach and there have been a lot of improvements made to the track over the years. There is a dedicated team of people working hard to make the races happen."

Every year riders bring their horses from far and wide to compete on the race course.  "There will be horses here from all overBritain, with a strong delegation fromIrelandas well, but what’s great is that a lot of local horses are on form this year. Horses from Tregaron and Ceredigion have enjoyed some success already this season. Trainers Huw and Rhys Evans for example are local and they have some very good horses. So there are high hopes for a Welsh winner!

Viewers can also be part of the fun with the ever popular Watch and Win competition. All you need to do is to register online or by phone and then you’ll receive four numbers that correspond to four horses. You win points if these horses come first, second or third in a race. The person with the most points at the end of the live show will win a whopping £500, so don’t forget to register! Visit the s4c.co.uk/rasus website for more details.  The number to phone to register is 0844 335 1897. Calls will cost 15p per minute from a BT landline depending on your call plan.
