Tuscany
The Tuscan region of wine is huge and vast, with a large number of hills and variety of mesoclimates, meaning that wines can and will vary from one field to the next, sometimes in huge amounts. The main grape variety is the Sangiovese, which has over 10 clones, including the Prugnello and Brunello.
In 1956, there was a severe frost that destroyed most - if not all - of the vines in Tuscany, and to help protect the economy quick growing, high yielding clones. These obviously couldn't maintain the quality of the low yeild, high quality vines, and as such the quality of tuscan wines suffered for 20 years or so.
Good Tuscan wines are the hardest to find, as wines from this region need to have either IGT or DOC status to display a vintage or provenance on the label. Most of the Tuscan wines are typically very dry.
